HUMBOLDT — It was a championship day for Dyer County Golf on Monday as the Choctaws captured the District 15A Tournament championship at Humboldt Country Club, while Beau Thurmon made it a sweep of the top honors by claiming the individual district championship. Dyer County put together a team score of 303, eight strokes better than runner-up Dyersburg's 311, to bring home the district title. Thurman led the championship effort with the best round of the tournament, firing a 71 to finish as the District 15A individual medalist. The Choctaws showed plenty of depth behind him. Jarrett Harrison turned in a 75, while Jamison Rhodes was just one stroke back with a 76. Miller Williams rounded out Dyer County's four counting scores with an 81. Those four rounds combined for Dyer County's championship total of 303. Jaden Hanna also competed for the Choctaws and finished with a 93. Dyersburg finished second in the team race with a 311, led by John David Morris' 74. Madison Academic posted a 338, while Gibson County finished at 350. South Gibson and Crockett County each shot 353, and South Side finished at 364. The victory continues an impressive season for a Dyer County boys' golf team that has consistently produced low scores throughout the fall. On Monday, the Choctaws delivered when the postseason arrived, putting three golfers — Thurmon, Harrison and Rhodes — in the 70s on their way to the district championship. Roberts, Flagg Advance for Lady Choctaws Dyer County also had a pair of golfers advance from the girls' District 15A Tournament. Halle Flagg led Dyer County with a 98, while Molly Roberts followed with a 105. Both scores are marked as advancing on the official results. Avery Hickman added a 125 for the Lady Choctaws. Dyer County finished with a team score of 203. South Gibson captured the girls' district team championship with a 149, led by Marleigh Chicantek, who fired a 69 to claim individual medalist honors. Madison Academic finished second with a 163, while Crockett County was third at 188. For Dyer County, the opening round of postseason play produced plenty to celebrate — a District 15A boys' team championship, an individual district championship for Thurman, and advancement for Roberts and Flagg on the girls' side. The postseason now continues for the Choctaws after a championship performance at Humboldt Country Club, they will compete in the Region Tournament on Monday.
