NEWBERN — Two of Tennessee’s top-ranked volleyball programs met Monday night as the No. 2-ranked Dyer County Lady Choctaws in Class AA hosted No. 1-ranked Arlington from Class AAA. The matchup gave Dyer County a chance to test itself against the state’s top-ranked team from the classification above, with all three Lady Choctaw squads competing during the night. Dyer County’s freshman team opened the evening with a 2-1 victory over Arlington, giving the Lady Choctaws their first win of the night. The junior varsity match was also tightly contested. Dyer County took an extended opening set, 28-26, before Arlington answered with a 25-22 victory in the second. With the match tied at one set apiece, Arlington captured the deciding third set, 15-13, to take the match 2-1. In the varsity showdown, Arlington came away with a 3-0 victory, but Dyer County became increasingly competitive as the match progressed. The Lady Tigers won the opening set 25-17 before the Lady Choctaws battled them to identical 25-21 scores in the second and third sets. Dyer County recorded four service aces in the varsity match, with the available statistics showing the Lady Choctaws putting 55 of their 61 serve attempts in play. While the varsity result went Arlington’s way, the night provided Dyer County with an opportunity to face elite competition as the Lady Choctaws continue through a schedule designed to prepare them for the challenges ahead. The matchup also came after a strong stretch for Dyer County that included three District 13-AA sweeps in one week, as the Lady Choctaws continue building toward the heart of their district schedule. Dyer County will return to District 13-AA play Thursday night when the Lady Choctaws host Obion County in Newbern.
