After a week away from competition due to extreme temperatures, the Dyer County golf teams returned to the course Monday for the Kickoff Classic at The Farms — and the Choctaws wasted little time getting back into form. The Dyer County boys captured first place in the 12-team field, firing a team score of 305 to finish five strokes ahead of runner-up McKenzie. Dyer County was led by two of the tournament’s top individual performers. Jarrett Harrison shot a 74 to finish second overall, while Beau Thurman carded a 75 to claim third place. The strong individual rounds helped the Choctaws secure the team victory over a field that included several West Tennessee programs. McKenzie finished second with a 310, followed by Dyersburg at 330 and Gibson County at 342. Trinity Christian Academy, Westview, Madison, Brighton, Scott’s Hill, Ripley, Halls and Covington rounded out the 12-team field. The Dyer County girls finished fourth in their separate eight-team competition, posting a team score of 216. Dyersburg claimed the girls’ team title with a 192. Scott’s Hill and Madison each shot 193, followed by Dyer County in fourth. Covington, McKenzie, Trinity Christian Academy and Halls completed the eight-team field. Monday’s tournament marked Dyer County’s first match following a week-long layoff brought on by extreme temperatures. The Choctaws returned to competition with a strong showing, highlighted by the boys’ tournament victory, top-three individual finishes from Harrison and Thurman, and a fourth-place finish from the girls. Dyer County won’t have to wait long to get back on the course. The Choctaws return to The Farms Tuesday at 4 p.m. for a match against Crockett County and Union City.
